As COVID-19 restrictions ease and more people begin travelling on Luas again, we remind everyone that, in accordance with the Luas Bye-laws, you must have a valid Luas ticket to travel on Luas. If you cannot produce a valid ticket when requested to do so by authorised Luas staff, you cannot travel on Luas. It’s that simple.

What is a valid ticket?

  • A ticket from a Luas Ticket Macine with the correct time, date, and location for your journey printed on the front of the ticket.
  • A Leap Card validated at a Luas Validator.
  • A TaxSaver Leap Card validated at a Luas Validator.
  • A Public Services Card with Free Travel validated at a Luas Validator.

To validate your Leap Card, TaxSaver Leap Card, or Public Services Card with Free Travel you must Touch On at any of the Luas Validators on the Luas platform before starting your journey on Luas. If you do not Touch On, you do not have a valid ticket for travel.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your Leap Card has enough Travel Credit or a valid TaxSaver ticket loaded onto it for travel.

You can be asked to show your ticket by Luas Customer Agents or selected Luas Security Officers at any time if you are on Luas or if you have been seen getting off a tram on a Luas platform. If you are caught using Luas without a valid ticket you will be issued a Standard Fare Notice for €100; however, if you pay the penalty within 14 days, a discounted penalty of €45 applies.

Passenger capacity on Luas and other public transport is now 100%. When travelling with Luas, please use Contactless Payment methods to pay for your journey where possible. This is a more hygienic way to pay.

Contactless Payment methods include:

  • Using any Ticket Machine located on all Luas platforms to buy a paper ticket with a Contactless debit / credit card, Google Pay, or Apple Pay. Luas recently increased the Contactless Payment limit to €50.
  • Touching On a Leap Card with Travel Credit or a monthly pass loaded onto it at any Luas Validator. You do not have to touch the Leap Card to the Validator. Hold it as close as you can without touching it until it has Touched On / Off successfully. You will hear a positive tone and see a successful Touch On / Off message on-screen.
  • Validating a Public Services Card with Free Travel at any Luas Validator.

If you are unable to use a Contactless Payment method, a Luas ticket can be purchased with cash or a non-contactless debit / credit card at any Luas Ticket Machine located on all Luas platforms.

Making sure you have a valid ticket for travel on Luas is simple. Remember to buy a ticket or validate your Leap Card or Public Services Card with Free Travel before getting on a tram. Doing so will save you the inconvience of a disrupted journey AND receiving a Standard Fare Penalty of €100.
